The economy has commanded Georgia voters’ attention, as many remain concerned about rising fuel and grocery prices. What issues are dominating the campaign in this state? Voting rights groups in the state have filed a lawsuit challenging the new maps, but it is unlikely to be decided by the primary election. McBath is now running in the neighboring Seventh Congressional District, setting up a primary against the current Democratic incumbent, Representative Carolyn Bourdeaux. In an effort to gain an extra seat in Congress, Georgia Republicans in the legislature added in a swath of Republican voters to the Sixth Congressional District, currently held by Representative Lucy McBath, a Democrat, and made it a largely Republican district. Will redistricting affect congressional elections in this state? If so, how? The new law also stripped the secretary of state of the chair position on the State Election Board, made the board more beholden to the partisan state legislature, and gave the board the authority to take over a county’s board of elections if an investigation finds evidence of wrongdoing or negligence. Voters will be limited in their ability to cast provisional ballots if they go to the wrong precinct, will have new identification requirements for voting by mail and, if they live in densely populated counties, will have significantly fewer drop boxes, among other changes. Georgia passed a sweeping overhaul to its election code last year, adding a host of new restrictions to voting and making fundamental alterations to election administration in the state.
